The Prize

The German Society for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (DGKL) awards the Biochemical Analysis Prize for outstanding scientific research in the field of biochemical and molecular analysis.
The prize is awarded for advancement in the field of biochemical and molecular analysis methods and for significant novel scientific findings achieved with modern analytical methods in the area of biological sciences, especially in clinical chemistry and clinical biology.
Biochemical analysis comprises methods of analytical chemistry whose techniques are based on biochemical reactions and/or reagents of biological origin. Furthermore, it includes methodical and instrument-based systems, especially those of instrumental analysis, that enable determination of biological parameters and parameters which engage in biological processes.

€ 50 000
This prize may be financed by a sponsor.

As a rule, the prize is awarded every two years, e.g. on the occasion of the Hj. Staudinger Symposium of the DGKL. Conferment is undertaken by the president of the DGKL during the opening ceremony. Each award recipient is then obliged to report on the most important findings of his/her work. Further, each award recipient must outline his/her work to the professional press.

Award recipients

Anybody presenting excellent scientific work in the area of biochemical and molecular analysis is eligible for the award. The work must be published or accepted for publication. It is also possible to honour several publications which have appeared over a longer period of time encompassing a specific field of activity.
The prize may be shared.

Call for proposals

The prize will be announced in at least five national and international professional journals detailing the closing date for proposals.
Candidates for the prize may apply in person or be suggested by members of the DGKL executive committee or the jury.
The following documents must be submitted:
Scientific curriculum vitae
Summary of the complete scientific work as well as individual works on which the proposal is based

Three members of the DGKL executive committee,
(1) three scientists nominated by the DGKL executive committee,
(2) secretary of the Biochemical Analysis Prize, appointed by the DGKL executive committee,
(3) if applicable, a representative of the prize sponsor.

The jury will draw up a shortlist from the submitted works. The selected works will then be presented to at least two referees nominated by the jury. Voting will take place by secret ballot and in writing through the jury. The majority of votes will decide. In case of a voting tie, the vote will be repeated and should a second voting tie occur, the president or his/her deputy will decide. The prize will be awarded without legal prejudice.
