Specialists in laboratory medicine support the diagnosis process in 2/3 of all treatment cases. They give advice to those directly involved in the prevention and treatment of medical conditions, in the detection and risk assessment of diseases and during monitoring the course of the illness. They may choose from a wide range of analytical methods, e.g. from the fields of clinical chemistry, immunology, molecular biology and microbiology. Scientifically based quality assurance and further development of analytical procedures are among the central areas of activity and most interesting tasks of laboratory physicians.
