Clinical Chemist

Training as a clinical chemist

Although laboratory tests of patient samples are usually required to be provided personally by a medical laboratory, the entire provision process involves further professions such as medical-technical assistants. Natural scientists, e.g. clinical chemists trained in laboratory diagnostics, are also frequently involved at the management level alongside medical practitioners. Due to modern laboratory automation and computer technology, the current work environment of an academic laboratory specialist is highly technological. Specialist knowledge of pre-analytics to post-analytics processes, including - according to RiliBÄK - modern quality management knowledge, is absolutely necessary. In addition to the various analysis options for early disease detection, diagnosis and therapy management, findings have to be interpreted and differential diagnostic references established.

The Continuing Education Commission of the DGKL, whose members are appointed by the DGKL executive committee, has defined examination guidelines and compiled these into a catalogue of topics for clinical chemists. This catalogue is based on the European EFLM Syllabus, the most recent version of which was published in 2018. Recognition as a clinical chemist takes place through an oral examination before the DGKL Examination Commission. Details can be found in the Guidelines and in the Rules of Procedure of the Commission for Continuing Education in Clinical Chemistry.

The five-year training course to become a clinical chemist requires a university degree either in medicine (approbation) or in a scientific course of studies (diploma or M.Sc. in chemistry, biochemistry, biology or a comparable subject). If possible, the comparability of a degree should have been confirmed by the Continuing Education Commission at the beginning of the continuing education period with the completed registration. At least four years in total must be completed at a clinical chemistry laboratory recognised as a training centre under the direction of a laboratory head authorised for further training. A further year of further training can also take place at another diagnostic or scientifically active laboratory and may be recognised accordingly by the Continuing Education Commission.

The DGKL offers an annual one-week revision course in Hannover to support examination preparations.
